Non mi sono ancora fatto un giudizio preciso sulla nuova coppia che in questi giorni è sulla bocca di tutti: i fidanzatini Microsoft e Novell.
Nel frattempo trovo interessante la posizione di David Sugar, che non è certo una testa calda, ma in questa occasione usa toni abbastanza accesi:
«However, it is in the second thing, in endorsing, participating in, and supporting Microsoft’s patent extortion racket, that Novell has truly jumped the shark and pulled a “SCO”, and in doing so has become both a danger to freedom everywhere.»
e ancora:
«What we can do, those who believe in freedom, those who use GNU/Linux, or those who everywhere who believe in free markets and reject gangsters and thugs and the destruction such people do to society? First and foremost we must stand together in solidarity and not let the enemies of freedom succeed in their game of divide and conquer. If Novell has violated the letter of the GPL as well as its spirit, those of us who maintain packages that are distributed today as part of SuSE/Novell GNU/Linux must exercise our option to issue cease and desist orders. When dealing with a dog with rabies, even if once a loved family pet, it is best to put such an animal down before it also has the opportunity to infect others. As for thugs like Microsoft, they must be treated as the cancer to business and society that they are.»

A me quello che preoccupa e’ che Novell = Gnome, un pezzo davvero importante di quello che oggi e’ Linux (certo, possiamo tutti passare a KDE o XFCE).
Sicuramente questo annuncio ha seminato dubbio e incertezza tra le “nostre” fila …. ed io mi chiedo, i cazzoni avvocati e commerciali di Novell sono cosi’ stupidi ed hanno avuto cosi’ carta bianca per gestire gli accordi ?

E di chi è il marchio, chi fornisce le infrastrutture?
A parte questo la parte più rilevante di quel che dice David è che Novell presta al fianco ad una sciagurata guerra contro tutti che Microsoft sta conducendo con armi sempre più pesanti.
Novell – e spero che i fatti mi smentiscono – potrebbe aver pensato “beh, meglio che io stia da questa parte della barricata: quando MS comincerà a lanciare granate io sarò al sicuro”. Magari questa nuova posizione le darà una mano a superare i risultati fiscali non proprio entusiasmenti degli ultimi anni?

A quanto ho leggiucchiato in giro la gente che sta lavorando sul progetto openSUSE non ha preso bene la notizia.
Adesso pero’ l’idea di abbattere il cane rabbioso pero’ mi pare un po’ eccessiva. Questi sviluppatori che credono nell’ idea progettuale della distribuzione linux facile e adatta a tutti gli scopi puo’ sempre contribuire a openSUSE che (come si legge nel footer del sito) non e’ collegato in alcun modo a Novell (almeno giuridicamente)
